A/B testing earns a bad reputation it mostly deserves: tests that run forever, results no one trusts, and the occasional setup that gets a site penalized for cloaking. None of that is inherent to testing — it's a process problem.
Test big swings, not button colors
Small changes need huge traffic to reach significance. Test things that could plausibly move the metric by double digits.
If you can't imagine the variant moving the number by 10%, it's not worth a test slot.
Keep Google out of the experiment
Serve variants with rel="canonical" pointing to the original, avoid redirect-based cloaking, and never show Googlebot something different from users.
